Sightseeing
Atlanta keeps growing while giving visitors and residents of all ages dozens of options and activities. New attractions include Zoo Atlanta's giant pandas. The pandas have finally arrived at their new $7 million habitat. Lun Lun and Yang Yang will be on view beginning November 20 for ten years. Zoo Atlanta is only one of two zoos in the United States to have the privilege of housing these cuddly creatures.
Atlanta is now home to a new National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team, the Atlanta Thrashers. Named after the Brown Thrasher, Georgia's state bird, the Atlanta Thrashers team is owned by Ted Turner of TBS who also owns the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks. This new team promises to bring even more sports excitement to the city in 2000 as they share the new, multi-purpose, state-of-the art downtown sports facility, Philips Arena with the Hawks.
A new Gone with the Wind Museum at the Margaret Mitchell House exhibiting the Herb Bridges collection of Gone with the Wind movie memorabilia opened December 15, 1999, the 60th anniversary of the movie's premiere. Bridges is considered the world's foremost authority on Gone With the Wind. The museum is comprised of three sections: "Making the Movie", "The Premiere" and "The Movie's Legacy."
The Atlanta Botanical Garden has teamed up with Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center to bring Atlanta's first children's garden, The Scottish Rite Children's Medical Center Children's Garden at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The new garden will focus on health and wellness for the body in a fun, innovative setting.
The Atlanta Shakespeare tavern recently underwent a massive renovation, emerging as The New American Shakespeare Tavern on its 10th anniversary this year. Beginning in September 2000, the tavern will reveal a new Elizabethan playhouse with a roof raised eight feet to create a Globe-inspired balcony, a new full-service kitchen, and many other complete renovations. World classics will continue to be shown in an intimate atmosphere with the charm of Shakespearean entertainment.
Atlanta opened the doors of its newest sports and entertainment facility, the Philips Arena, hosting the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta's new NHL expansion team. The Grand Opening was hosted by none other than part-time Atlanta resident, Elton John. The arena will connect to the CNN Center via a retail atrium and a 3,000 square foot Philips Electronics retail showcase. In addition to the entertainment options inside the arena, the areas surrounding the arena will be renovated to create a complete entertainment district including Centennial Olympic Park, the Georgia Dome, Georgia International Plaza and the Georgia World Congress Center. The new streetscapes and lighting will allow for 24-hour access and a pedestrian-friendly atmosphere connecting the entertainment, meeting and sports facilities to the hotel district.
