TOPICS AND SPEAKERS
Pre-Conference Bonus Seminar

This year, the AWSCPA is partnering with The Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting (EFWA) in presenting a Pre-Conference Bonus Seminar including three dynamic workshops:

  • Management Styles identifies traits of successful leaders, explores leadership styles, and assesses the leadership needs of each individual employee
  • Negotiating Conflict Situations identifies the problems, the parties, and the processes for resolving conflict
  • Presentation Skills explains characteristics of effective speakers and develops skills for organizing a powerful presentation
These workshops are part of the Leadership Training Series available for certification from EFWA. Each workshop is highly interactive and combines discussion, case studies, group practice sessions, and pertinent illustrations. Participants have an opportunity to immediately apply the concepts presented. The best part - the seminar is included in the conference registration fee!

In addition to the customary and valuable accounting, auditing, tax and financial planning updates, concurrent sessions will be presented by recognized experts in their fields and cover such timely topics as (partial listing):
  • Tax Litigation
  • Women's Issues in Financial Planning
  • Networking as a Professional
  • Career Development
  • Creating Your Business Dreams
The Society is also planning to have several featured speakers including a keynote speaker and three featured presenters on various timely issues. This web site will be updated as speakers and topics are confirmed.

The Society is really excited that our conference will be honored by The Honorable Ann Richards, former governor of Texas, who will give the keynote address on Thursday. The 45th Governor of the State of Texas, Ms. Richards catapulted into the national consciousness with her unforgettable speech at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. This brilliant former teacher and mother of four was one of the most effective elected officials, first as State Treasurer and then as Governor. She created thousands of jobs; rewrote the penal code; introduced educational policies that raised SAT scores and reduced the drop-out rate; and brought state government directly into the communities. She pioneered major fiscal and social reforms and worked tirelessly to appoint more minorities and women to state posts. She currently serves on many corporate boards, works with a major law firm and lectures. A long time advocate of civil rights and economic justice, she appointed more women, blacks and Hispanics than any of her predecessors. She is known for speaking out for women's issues and admonishing women to assume leadership roles in every arena. You won't want to miss this dynamic woman's keynote address to our Society.

Plans are coming together for a fabulous conference with two and a half days of interesting speakers and topics certain to please both attendees in public practice and attendees in industry. The conference will kick things off with the annual Affiliate and Members-At-Large Exchanges on Wednesday afternoon prior to the first general session.

The AWSCPA Conference features many top level professional speakers as well as many local and regional experts.

In addition to quality continuing education, we will be enjoying many of the things that make San Antonio unique. Our evening activities will begin Wednesday with a narrated cruise down the scenic San Antonio River, where we will enjoy all the River Walk sights, including the terrific shops and restaurants. Our annual awards dinner on Thursday night will be held at the historic site of the Ursuline Convent and Academy, a short walk from our hotel. Erected between 1848 and 1868, the buildings and beautiful chapel are located on the River Walk in a secluded, park-like setting nestled among the skyscrapers of downtown San Antonio. The Southwest School of Art & Craft now occupies the site. Please visit its web site at www.swschool.org for more information about this wonderful location.

Plan to stay over Friday night, as our closing event will be an evening at Fiesta Noche del Rio, translated "party night of the river." This extravaganza showcases the dances and music of Old Mexico and San Antonio. The annual event, held only on summer weekends, is the oldest outdoor performance of its kind in the United States. The Fiesta takes place in the heart of the River Walk at the unique Arneson River Theater, where the San Antonio River separates the audience, seated on grassy steps, from the stage. Included with the full registration fee for conference attendees, tickets will also be available for a nominal fee for family and friends. Visit San Antonio's website at www.sanantoniocvb.com to read more about Fiesta Noche del Rio.

Have you seen the movie "Miss Congeniality"? The movie gives a glimpse of San Antonio and many of the sights we will be seeing, including the Alamo and the Arneson River Theater, where some of the competitions for the "beauty pageant" were filmed.

Keep humming "Deep in the Heart of Texas" and make plans to saddle up for a great conference.

CPE: Following the guidelines specified in individual state regulations, up to 18 hours of continuing professional education credits may be available for the Conference sessions

SIGHTSEEING
San Antonio is a great city with many cultures and a proud heritage. A city made up of many cultures brought here by the 5 military installations as well as the native Latino culture. San Antonio offers many selections of restaurants, museums and entertainment.

As the saying goes, "everything is bigger in Texas," and shopping in San Antonio is no exception! The eighth largest city in the United States, San Antonio offers an abundant variety of shops, galleries and malls containing collectibles and clothing as unique and diverse as the Texas landscape. From fine art to Western wear to spicy salsas, you can be sure no shopping list will be left incomplete.

The Alamo has more than 2.5 million people a year visit. The 4.2 acre complex known worldwide as "The Alamo" is where people come to see the old mission where a small band of Texans held out for thirteen days against the centralist army of General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Although the Alamo fell in the early morning hours of March 6, 1836, the death of the Alamo Defenders has come to symbolize courage and sacrifice for the cause of Liberty.

The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center (GCAC) was founded in 1980 as a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization whose mission is to preserve, promote and develop the arts and culture of the Chicano/Latino/Native American peoples. Each year the Center presents and produces a season of events, exhibitions and festivals, including the San Antonio Cine Festival, the Juried Women’s Art Exhibit, the Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio, the San Antonio Inter-American Bookfair & Literary Festival, Hecho a Mano/Made by Hand fine arts and fine crafts market, a season of plays by the resident theatre company Los Actores de San Antonio, the Performing Arts Series, and productions featuring the Guadalupe Dance Company.

The House is located on a bend of river, at the foot of King William, one of the oldest historic districts in Texas. Carl Hilmer Guenther founder of Pioneer Flour Mills, built this elegant home in 1960. The restored house offers a museum where mill memorabilia is displayed. Of interest to collectors are the Dresden china anniversary plates made in Germany until WWII.

America's Original Kiddie Park, as verified by the National Amusement Park Historical Association sits in San Antonio. Established in 1925, a highlight of any visit to Kiddie Park is the 1918 Herschell-Spillman Carousel featuring 36 jumping horses and two Chariots. This lovely carousel was created in North Tonawanda, New York and originally located in Miami, Florida. It has been wearing its magic on the children of San Antonio and many visitors since 1935.

The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a cultural oasis located in the heart of one of the nation's truly dynamic cities. Contrasted to the teeming activity of metropolitan San Antonio, the 819-acre historical park offers visitors a unique opportunity to escape from the present and journey back tin time to a fascinating episode in Texas history. Preserved within the park are four Spanish Colonial missions, each with an active parish church – missions San Jose, San Juan, Espada, and Concepcion – and two of the best surviving example of Spanish Colonial irrigation systems in the United States.
