FASB continues its march toward increasing the required use of fair value accounting for financial instruments along with greatly expanded disclosures. Not only financial institutions are affected – this year, company sponsors of pension and post-retirement plans were required to provide expanded disclosures about the fair value of plan assets in the company’s own financial statements. The FASB and the IASB are both working on financial instruments projects that will radically change the accounting for many financial instruments, but these two separate projects diverge in many ways.
