Welcome to the website of the AWSCPA DC Metro Affiliate!

On behalf of our Affiliate’s Board of Directors and Members, we are happy to share with you that we are getting ready to enter our 3rd fiscal year as of July 1st, 2011. So many new and exciting events have taken place since we began, including having new members join and getting ready to award our first scholarship in June!

We are dedicated to providing you with more than just a membership… through education, advocacy and networking with dedicated professionals, we continually strive to provide the best for you!

AWSCPA is the voice of women in the accounting profession and each member holds a unique perspective, based upon their professional and personal experience. Perhaps the greatest benefit of AWSCPA membership is the opportunity to network, learn and grow from the experience, knowledge and wisdom of our members throughout the association.

As our membership continues to grow to include fellow accounting professionals that work in a variety of industries and roles, we as Board Members can continue to build our local programs to offer networking events, community service opportunities, CPE, camaraderie and more.

If you are a Member looking to get more involved, let us know which committee you wish to be a part of so we may include you in future meetings. If you are not a Member and are interested in joining our Affiliate, please visit the organization’s national website at www.awscpa.org.

Looking a little ahead, in October 2011, AWSCPA Members will have the opportunity to participate in the 8th Annual Joint National Conference with Members of the American Society of Women Accountants in Charlotte, North Carolina. The planned educational opportunities coupled with the business meetings and social events, promise to engage all who attend.

In closing, we would like to extend an emphatic thank you to our DC Metro Affiliate Board of Directors for their dedication and hard work to help grow our Affiliate since its commencement in December 2009.

We thank you for the opportunity to serve you this year as President and Vice President of the AWSCPA’s DC Metro Affiliate. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact either of us.

Best Regards,

THE VOICE OF WOMEN CPAs

Since its creation over seven decades ago, the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants has been the voice of women in the accounting profession.

AWSCPA is the only organization devoted exclusively to the support and professional development of women CPAs. The Society is also a leader in addressing these concerns:

  • Gender equity
  • The glass ceiling
  • Work and family issues

To accomplish our mission, AWSCPA offers in-depth support in four important areas: public awareness, networking, professional growth and advocacy.

WHAT AWSCPA MEANS TO ME

When I was first approached by the National AWSCPA organization to assist in creating a DC affiliate I had no idea of what to expect. I concurred with the main mission of supporting women in the CPA profession so I committed myself to assisting in getting our affiliate off the ground. We started with a core group of eight dynamic women, many of us from different CPA firms and at different points in our careers. The eight of us worked very hard that first year in getting our chapter organized by electing our executive board and committee chairs, creating our bylaws, preparing the necessary governmental filings and getting our first events planned. It was a tremendous amount of work, but in hindsight we all made good friends along the way. The rest has been a rewarding journey.

Over the past couple of years we have held numerous social outings, events that offered continuing education, and community service projects. In 2011 we awarded our first scholarship to a young woman from Salisbury University. I am very proud of how much we have accomplished over the past couple of years, and this is only the beginning.

If I were asked what I take away from being active in this affiliate, so many items come to mind. I have met so many compelling women I most likely would not have had the opportunity to do so otherwise. I have learned from each woman regardless of whether a new or seasoned professional, as well as different points of view from those in private accounting, large public firms and small public sole proprietorships. My favorite aspect is our community service projects. There is something special about giving back to the community as a group. This year our philanthropy committee organized two events for our members. We worked at the Capital Area Food Bank distribution center on a designated Saturday this summer and also participated in the Walk for the Homeless in November. Community service brings people together and special unique bonds are made.

If you are interested in sharing ideas and visions on our profession with women in private and public accounting please give membership a try. Our committees are always looking for additional help and would love to have you participate. Our affiliate is as strong as it is because of our members. Every member brings something special to the group. I look forward to seeing you soon.
