An Introduction from Our President:
The first quarter is the busiest time of the year
for CPAs. The feelings of being stretched for time, having less
patience with people and the lack of a regular sleep schedule are
familiar to most CPAs. Each and every year the question arises,
"How will I get through the season?" And as the end of
season approaches, it's spring time. The spring flowers and longer
days bring us to the end of another successful busy season.
The AWSCPA - New Jersey Affiliate is planning some great events for
the upcoming quarter. There are networking opportunities at each
one of our events. These opportunities can be on a professional
level as well as a personal level. I look forward to you joining
us. Please reach out to us at njawscpa@gmail.com
with any questions or comments.
Once again, I would like to thank the board members for their
dedication and job well done. Everyone's participation in the
organization is what makes the AWSCPA-New Jersey affiliate a success.

Book Review Article -The 7 Habits of Highly
Effective People, by Stephen Covey
By Diana Miller, CPA, PSA
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is a very insightful book
and framework for the process of Development. It is not a quick fix
but if you apply some of the fundamental philosophies, it will
affect who you are, your character and the results will be
positive. A lot of it is 'common knowledge' however not necessarily
'common practice'. Here is a brief summary of each of the 7 Habits discussed
in his book:
Be Proactive
Recognizing our responsibility to make things happen and instead of
reacting, focus on areas we can control - Circle of Concern (little
control) verse Circle of Influence (have control). You choose your
attitude, you wake up every morning and only you choose it.
Begin With the End in Mind
Envision and see potential - use your imagination. Begin each day
with a clear vision of your desired destination or direction and
make it happen. Write down your goals, your vision, your mission
statement and create your own future.
Put First Things First
Focus on what needs to be accomplished; not how. Be patient,
visualize and focus on your highest priorities. Choose your Big
Rocks and start with them.
Think Win-Win
Do you have integrity, maturity and an abundance mentality - and do
you seek mutual benefit and satisfaction? This is a balancing act
that requires confidence, courage and consideration.
Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood
Communication - how important is it? How many of us listen with the
intent to understand; not with the intent to respond. Generally,
when listening we are evaluating, probing, advising and
interpreting...how about just listening and understanding.
Synergize
Teamwork! Teamwork! Teamwork! Aren't two heads typically better
than one! This is the development of unity, creativity with others
and open-minds. Differences are strengths, not weaknesses.
Sharpen the Saw
Lastly, to feel Continuous Improvement, we must continuously
Sharpen the Saw and reflect back to all the other habits and live
those habits in every aspect - physical, social/emotional, mental,
and spiritual. Every day is a new opportunity and it's all up to
you.
This top-seller has helped many solve personal and professional problems.
Our character is a composite of our habits. Changing habits is
hard, but can be done by tremendous commitment. Remember to always
treat others as you want them to treat you. We must understand that
the best contributions of people - their hearts and minds - are as
volunteers, because they want to.

Josephine LoBianco
|
By:
Sarah Krom, Director of Publications
This
edition of Member Spotlight is intended to introduce you to some of
the newest members of the AWSCPA-NJ Affiliate.
Josephine
LoBianco is so new to the Organization that she has not yet had the
opportunity to attend one of our events. Still, she promises to be
an active member, looking to give back as much as she receives from
the AWSCPA. She has already shared her knowledge of the AWSCPA-NJ
Affiliate with other students as well as her excitement of the
Organization's benefits. When asked what made her join our
Organization, she replied, "The most important reason why I
joined the AWSCPA is the reason why every young woman who is
looking forward for a career in accounting should join, to become
acquainted with highly professional, educated women around my local
area."
On the
personal side, Josephine currently reside in Toms River, NJ,
living with her loving mom who has been very supportive of her
college education and her aunt Enza. During her college education
she met her "wonderful boyfriend who has influenced (her)
career choice more than anyone else. He is an accountant working at
Johnson Lambert & Co. LLP and motivated (her) to having a
career in accounting."
Her
favorite thing about accounting is that the field has no
limitations. "I can take my CPA and have endless
choices." Josephine is a senior at Monmouth University,
graduating in December 2010 with 150 credits and looks forward to
meeting everyone involved in the Organization. In closing, I feel
it's appropriate to share Josephine's favorite quote, "Live
your dreams."
Welcome
to the AWSCPA-NJ Affiliate, Josephine.
