WELCOME TO THE NYC AFFILIATE OF AWSCPA

Welcome to the NYC Affiliate of the American Woman's Society of CPAs website! As President of the NYC Affiliate, I wanted to introduce myself and tell you a bit about our chapter. I am a CPA in the state of New York and I am currently an accountant at Ernst & Young. Through my involvement with the AWSCPA, I have had the honor of getting to know the intelligent and powerful women that are serving on the Board this upcoming year. The NY Affiliate has an extremely diverse Board with different professional backgrounds including public and private accounting in various industries, recruiting, financial advisory, compliance and education.

The NY Affiliate has accomplished a lot during the 2011/2012 year. We hosted several fun events for our members including a healthy mind and body seminar, makeup event at MAC, a breakaway from busy season spa night and a skincare event. We partnered with Zoologic Learning Solutions to provide our members with discounted CPE credits. We expanded our social media reach through Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Our job bank committee connected many members with job openings. We participated in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer where we raised over $4,000.

The Affiliate’s most successful event of the year was the 26th Annual Dinner held at 3 West Club on July 10th, 2012. The Annual Dinner began with a cocktail reception followed by a three course dinner where we announced our scholarship winner, Zoe Granelli, and installed the 2012-2013 Board. The program featured Ms. Leslie Seidman, Chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, as the Keynote Speaker. Over 150 people were in attendance, representing over 20 companies from various industries.

Being involved in the AWSCPA allows members to enhance relationships, develop superior executive skills and build a strong network of professional resources. Membership with the AWSCPA also invites the woman CPA into a close group of friends – that care about each other, support each other and celebrate each others’ accomplishments.

Thank you for visiting our website. I hope that you return to it often to look at our upcoming events calendar, job postings and scholarship opportunities, as well as read stories about our members and view pictures from past events. The site hosts many ways for you to get involved with our powerful organization of woman CPA’s. Please contact me at jacqueline.finn1@gmail.com anytime if you are interested in becoming more involved.

I encourage you to be an active member in the AWSCPA NYC Affiliate, and I hope to see you at future events!

AWARDS

WOMAN OF COURAGE ANNOUNCED

The American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA) has announced that the Society’s 2010 Woman of Courage Award was presented to Ms. Perpetual Manatse at the organization’s 2010 Joint National Conference in Nashville. Ms. Manatse is currently a Manager in the Employee Benefits Audit Group with Deloitte, New York, and previously held the position of Audit Supervisor in her native Zimbabwe until her recent relocation to New York and subsequent promotion. Ms. Manatse has been with Deloitte since completing her education in Zimbabwe in 2004. She specializes in employee benefit plan audits and in that role, works with various other groups within Deloitte. Audit teams call upon her for advice and consultation on compliance, auditing, accounting, financial reporting and regulatory issues.

She graduated from the National University of Science & Technology - Zimbabwe (NUST), earning her BCOM with honors in accounting and one year later, from the University of South Africa (UNISA) with a Bachelors of Accounting Science with honors, majoring in Accountancy. She earned her CPA designation in the United States.

Ms. Manatse was born 30 years ago in Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. Recently, the country has suffered political and economic unrest. Just before she left in September 2007, inflation was over a thousand percent (1000%) and audit clients were accounting for hyperinflation accounts. She and her family would go without electricity and water for over 12 hours, and she would stay up late to get on the Internet when the data traffic was low, and stay up late to wait for the water that sometimes came late in the night just to do laundry before the water disappeared again for another 12 hours. During this time, she had begun her career with Deloitte. She realized that she was not able to bring anything home to help support the family, due to Zimbabwe’s economic strife. She knew it was time to leave her homeland.

After a rare interval where the electrical supply and Internet service cooperated, she applied for and received her dream job with Deloitte in New York. She then was able to tell her husband and daughter that their dream had finally come true. It required that they had to leave their family, friends and everything including her husband’s growing business, and head towards New York City, and a foreign land - where she had no family, no close friends and where her husband needed to look for a job.

It has been almost three years since the transition. Ms. Manatse and her family have endured the culture shock and the winter storms. Her husband got a job. It has turned out that it is a beautiful place with wonderful people who support them.
