American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants - NYC Affiliate

Welcome to the NYC Affiliate of the American Woman's Society of CPAs website! As President of the NYC Affiliate, I wanted to introduce myself and tell you a bit about our affiliate. I am a CPA in the state of New York and an accountant at a hedge fund in Manhattan. Through my involvement with the AWSCPA, I have had the honor of getting to know many intelligent and influential women members. I am privileged to work with our extremely diverse Board of Directors who represent many professional backgrounds including public and private accounting in various industries. These women serve each year to support our affiliates mission each year and I am very lucky to work with each of them. I would especially like to welcome each of the new women CPA’s who are serving on the board for the upcoming year - I look forward to working with you.

The NY Affiliate has accomplished a lot during the past year. We hosted several fun events for our members including a healthy mind and body seminar and a social styles breakfast. However, I am very proud of the fundraising efforts made by our affiliate this past year. We raised nearly $20,000 for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and for Hurricane Sandy relief for Long Beach, NY - a nearby town devastated by the storm. I am very proud of all of our members hard work to make these events successful and thankful to each person who supported us - your contributions, time and effort made an impact in our community.

The Affiliate’s largest event of the year was the 27th Annual Dinner held at 3 West Club on July 10th, 2013. The Annual Dinner began with a cocktail reception followed by a three course dinner where we announced our scholarship winner, Michelle Ciesielska, and initiated the 2013-2014 Board. Over 140 people were in attendance, representing over 20 companies from various industries and the program featured Ms. Carolyn Buck Luce as the Keynote Speaker.

Being involved in the AWSCPA allows members to enhance relationships, develop executive skills and build a strong network of professional resources. Membership with the AWSCPA also invites the woman CPA into a close group of friends – that care about each other, support each other and celebrate each others’ accomplishments. In an effort to grow professionally, we continue to partner with Zoologic Learning Solutions to provide our members with discounted CPE credits and our job bank committee supports our members by sharing new new job opportunities.

Thank you for visiting our website. I hope that you return to it often to look at our upcoming events calendar, job postings and scholarship opportunities, as well as to read stories about our members and view pictures from past events. Please contact me anytime if you are interested in becoming more involved or if you have any feedback.

I encourage you to be an active member in the AWSCPA NYC Affiliate - an organization which has enable me to grow into a stronger leader and woman. I hope to see you at one of our future events!

Each year, AWSCPA-NYC awards a scholarship to students in graduate or undergraduate Accounting studies. The scholarship is presented to recognize and reward women pursuing a career in the Accounting profession

AWSCPA-NYC continues to promote and support women in Accounting by providing visibility and recognition for the organization and its members through a positive presence; creating an awareness of the obstacles that hinder women in maximizing their potential; providing resources, training and support for balanced personal and professional development of its members; providing opportunities for leadership, participation, networking and mentoring.

2009 Scholarship Winner
Our 2009 Scholarship winner was Laura Vollmer.  Laura attends Binghamton University and will be graduating in May 2010.  She is the campus Executive Vice President of Alpha Kappa Psi, a member of Beta Alpha Psi, Events Coordinator of the Binghamton University golf club, and part of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Scholars Program that assists freshman students with the college transition.  Throughout all of her extracurricular activities, Laura has impressively been able to maintain a 3.82 GPA.  She will be the first of her immediate family to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree.  Laura impressed us with her desire to want to be an example to other women in our industry.  Congratulations Laura!

2010 Scholarship Winner
Our 2010 Scholarship winner was Amanda Garzon.  Amanda attends Fordham University and will be graduating in May 2011.  Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a Masters Degree in Accounting. She is the Vice President of Pledges on the executive board of Beta Alpha Psi Fordham University chapter, where she participates in many meetings, events, conferences and community service activities. Amanda interned last summer at Ernst & Young in the Core Business Service Unit and she continued to work part-time during the 2009-2010 school year.  This summer, Amanda is interning in the Core Assurance practice where she hopes to pursue her career full-time upon completion of her Master’s degree.   Amanda impressed us with her passion for the accounting field, her desire to mentor other young women in our industry, and her excellent academic standing she’s achieved thus far while supporting herself through college.  Congratulations Amanda!

2011 Scholarship Winner
Our 2011 Scholarship winner was Samantha Arpino.  Samantha is an accounting major at Hofstra with a 4.0 GPA, which she plans on keeping through graduation in 2012.  She is the Vice President of the accounting society at Hofstra as well as a member of the Beta Alpha Psi accounting honor society, the Golden Key National Honor Society, the Institute for Management Accountants.  In her free time, Samantha provides her tutoring services to students on campus in accounting and other related subjects.   Samantha is currently working as a summer intern in the audit practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers in NYC.

2013 scholarship winner - Michelle Ciesielska
Our 2013 Scholarship winner is Michelle Ciesielska. Michelle attends Fordham University and is the first woman in her family to attain higher education. She will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Public Accounting in May 2014, and following that, she will pursue a Master of Science in Professional Taxation. These educational requirements will allow her to sit for the CPA Exam. Michelle is very involved on campus despite being a commuter from Queens. She is a Member of Beta Alpha Psi and was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma earlier this year. She knows how to manage her busy schedule and had the honor to work at Merrill Lynch and the Federal Reserve Bank of NY while being a full-time student. This summer, Michelle will intern at KPMG, and she hopes to pursue her career there full-time. Congratulations Michelle!

2014 scholarship winner – Juliette Levinton
Our 2014 Scholarship winner is Juliette Levinton. Juliette is a student of the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter College, where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA in all of her accounting classes, and will be graduating in May 2016. During the school year, Juliette works as executive assistant to the managing member of a financial advising company, in addition to working on campus as the newly elected President of the Hunter College radio station. She is eager to continue working in the field of accounting, and hopes to continue living and working in NYC, ideally at one of the Big 4 accounting firms, when she graduates. We were impressed by Juliette’s diligent work ethic while maintaining a stellar GPA, as well as her truly authentic passion for accounting. Congratulations Juliette!
