Dear
Kim,
I
would like to welcome everyone to a new year
with AWSCPA. My name is Laura Foley, and I
work for Peto & Co. This month is my
10 year anniversary in the public accounting
field, and I am very proud to be your president
this year. We have a wonderful line up of
presentations for you to attend each month, such
as the sales tax update by Pam Reinke from the
City of Tucson. I look forward to meeting
as many of you as I can during the year.
This
year will also provide a wonderful chance for
education and networking at the Joint National
Conference in Las Vegas October 19-21,
2009. If you have not registered, you
might want to look into the 3 days of CPE
sessions to be provided by the AWSCPA. It
sounds like it will be a lot of fun.
Finally, now is a great
opportunity for anyone who is interested in
volunteering for a committee this year.
The chair of each committee has been decided,
but there is always room for people who want to
get more involved in this organization.
Also don't be shy about bringing a friend to our
luncheons. They are always
welcome.

Presented
by: Pam Reinke, City of
Tucson
Pam
Reinke will be discussing a variety of topics
related to the imposition of City of Tucson
sales tax. A review of the types of taxes
the City has along with the types of business
activities subject to the taxes will be
discussed. Licensing requirements and
changes to Tucson's tax code will be
covered. The City's new tax revenue
management system and e-taxes will be
covered. An overview of audits and common
problems will also be
covered.
Pam
Reinke - Finance Manager with the City of Tucson
Finance Department, Revenue Division - is an
accounting graduate from the U of A. She
began her career with the City of Tucson in 1985
as a Senior Tax Auditor. In that role she
took part in field audits of small and
large businesses in Tucson. In 1998, Pam
became Principal Auditor and spent
time supervising the senior auditors,
responding to taxpayer questions, teaching the
City's tax seminars, reviewing building
permits looking for unlicensed contractors, and
handling voluntary compliance requests and
voluntary use tax surveys. Pam was promoted
to Finance Manager in 2007 and now
supervises two sections in the Revenue Division
- Tax Audit and
Investigations.

In
an effort to give back to the community, the
AWSCPA Tucson affiliate has started a tradition
of collecting donations for select charities and
other charitable endeavors each year. We also
have our own scholarship fund through which we
have given scholarships to deserving college
students - we awarded three $750
scholarships last year and two $500
scholarships in each of the prior three years.
We have also collected clothing for the YWCA
Your Sister's Closet. This year we have plans to
help the community as follows: YWCA
Your Sister's Closet This worthy
organization provides unemployed women with
clothing that is appropriate for job interviews
and to begin employment. They need professional
clothing that is stylish, clean and preferably
ON HANGERS. Clean out a closet and bring your
gently used items to our next luncheon. You'll
receive a receipt for your contribution, and
we'll take care of delivering them to the
YWCA.Find out more about this organization by
visiting their website at
http://www.ywcatucson.org/. SCHOLARSHIPS
The Tucson AWSCPA has a scholarship
program for female accounting students who have
taken a non-traditional path to their education.
We have increased our scholarships from two at
$500 each to three at $750
each. There are several ways you
can help fund these
scholarships: $$$ Give and
receive... participatein the50/50 raffle at each
meeting - one ticket for $1 or six tickets for
$5. The proceeds are split - half to the winner
and half to benefit the scholarship fund. OR you
can purchase tickets for the next raffle by
sending your check (made out to AWSCPA) to:
Chris Elzy, AWSCPA Treasurer (fbo scholarship),
P.O. Box 41361, Tucson, Arizona 85717-1361.
Please indicate "Raffle tickets" and the number
of tickets on the memo line. In
addition, you can help this cause through a
tax-deductible contribution directly to our
scholarship fund at The University of Arizona
Foundation. Simply complete the contribution
form below and mail it along with your
contribution to the Foundation or give it to a
Board member at the next
luncheon. |
