Dear Kim,

081909luncheon1

What a wonderful time we had at the December meeting.  David Cohen gave us extremely useful information for the upcoming tax season while also being entertaining.  Congratulations to Lisa Gundvaldson for winning the gift certificate to the Melting Pot.  (Maybe she will take me with her.)  Also, a big thank you everyone who brought donations for the Community Food Bank and Your Sister's Closet.  The winner of our 50/50 raffle was Cinde Haines of Hammel, Beal & Lauer, P.C., and she graciously donated the winnings to our scholarship fund.

Come to our next meeting and learn about the status of the global economy and get a chance to win another $50 gift certificate to the Melting Pot.  The attendance at our meetings is improving, and I would love to see it continue.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the winners of our scholarships.

The four $750 tuition scholarships went to --

Melissa Marie Tomlinson - University of Arizona (prior year recipient), Lisa Glasgow - University of Arizona (prior year recipient),

Leonora Escobar - Pima Community College, and

Lisa Roethle - Grand Canyon University

And our Becker scholarship for $1,500 was won by April Wear.

Sincerely,

Laura Foley

Global Economic Outlook

Presented by: Vance Falbaum, RBC Wealth Management

Upcoming luncheon will be a very exciting one for many of us as Vance Falbaum, CIMAŽ shares his thoughts on the Global Economic Outlook.

Mr. Falbaum has worked in the Private Client Group at RBC Wealth Management since 1988 and is one of 34 members of RBC Wealth Management's Senior Consulting Group. Falbaum Investment Group assists clients with developing and implementing wealth management and protection strategies for their business and family assets.

As we emerge from one of the most challenging years in memory, we are bringing you a perspective on what has transpired as well as what we might expect in the coming years.  Mr. Falbaum will include in his presentation remarks on the type of recovery we may have in store, how rising interest rates are affected by and effect unemployment, the stock market and current global government debt loads, and the U.S. debt and deficit.

Please join us in this stimulating discussion and bring your thoughts and questions!

Charitable Endeavors

In an effort to give back to the community, the AWSCPA Tucson affiliate has started a tradition of collecting donations for select charities and other charitable endeavors each year. We also have our own scholarship fund through which we have given scholarships to deserving college students - we awarded three $750 scholarships last year and two $500 scholarships in each of the prior three years. We have also collected clothing for the YWCA Your Sister's Closet. This year we have plans to help the community as follows:

YWCA Your Sister's Closet  This worthy organization provides unemployed women with clothing that is appropriate for job interviews and to begin employment. They need professional clothing that is stylish, clean and preferably ON HANGERS. Clean out a closet and bring your gently used items to our next luncheon. You'll receive a receipt for your contribution, and we'll take care of delivering them to the YWCA. Find out more about this organization by visiting their website at
www.ywcatucson.org/.

SCHOLARSHIPS  The Tucson AWSCPA has a scholarship program for female accounting students who have taken a non-traditional path to their education. We have awarded four scholarships of $750 each this year.

There are several ways you can help fund these scholarships:

$$$ Give and receive... participate in the 50/50 raffle at each meeting - one ticket for $1 or six tickets for $5. The proceeds are split - half to the winner and half to benefit the scholarship fund. OR you can purchase tickets for the next raffle by sending your check (made out to AWSCPA) to: Chris Elzy, AWSCPA Treasurer (fbo scholarship), P.O. Box 41361, Tucson, Arizona 85717-1361. Please indicate "Raffle tickets" and the number of tickets on the memo line.

In addition, you can help this cause through a tax-deductible contribution directly to our scholarship fund at The University of Arizona Foundation. Please contact a board member for information on how to contribute directly to the fund.
