Dear
Kim,
Well,
I have been to my first national
convention. I wish you could have been
there. The speakers were wonderful and
informative. Believe
it or not, several of the speakers I heard were
from Phoenix. I have several new contacts
for the programming committee. I learned a
lot about how the other affiliates provide value
to their members. I'll have several new
ideas to present to the board. The
meeting yesterday at McMahon's was lightly
attended so we were not able to make the
contribution for Breast Cancer. There are
other topics, however, that are provided by
MassMutual, so we can try again. Please
plan to attend the November meeting and learn
about White Collar crime from an agent of the
local FBI office. It's always amazing to
hear the war stories from these
agents. Sincerely,
Laura
Foley

White-collar
crimes cost the United States more than $300
billion annually according to the FBI.
White-collar
crimes are synonymous with the full range of
frauds committed by business and government
professionals. It includes fraud,
bankruptcy fraud, bribery, insider trading,
embezzlement, computer crime, forgery, identity
theft and many others.
Today's
con artists are more savvy and sophisticated
than ever, engineering everything from slick
online scams to complex stock and health care
frauds. The tools of the trade are often
paperwork or through the computer.
Jan Burris, an FBI agent in
Tucson office, will talk about the variety
of white-collar crimes the agency investigates,
how to identify and protect yourself from
common
scams.

In
an effort to give back to the community, the
AWSCPA Tucson affiliate has started a tradition
of collecting donations for select charities and
other charitable endeavors each year. We also
have our own scholarship fund through which we
have given scholarships to deserving college
students - we awarded three $750
scholarships last year and two $500
scholarships in each of the prior three years.
We have also collected clothing for the YWCA
Your Sister's Closet. This year we have plans to
help the community as follows: YWCA
Your Sister's Closet This worthy
organization provides unemployed women with
clothing that is appropriate for job interviews
and to begin employment. They need professional
clothing that is stylish, clean and preferably
ON HANGERS. Clean out a closet and bring your
gently used items to our next luncheon. You'll
receive a receipt for your contribution, and
we'll take care of delivering them to the YWCA.
Find out more about this organization by
visiting their website at www.ywcatucson.org/. SCHOLARSHIPS
The Tucson AWSCPA has a scholarship
program for female accounting students who have
taken a non-traditional path to their education.
We have increased our scholarships
from three to four $750
each. There are several ways you
can help fund these
scholarships: $$$ Give and
receive... participate in the 50/50 raffle at
each meeting - one ticket for $1 or six tickets
for $5. The proceeds are split - half to the
winner and half to benefit the scholarship fund.
OR you can purchase tickets for the next raffle
by sending your check (made out to AWSCPA) to:
Chris Elzy, AWSCPA Treasurer (fbo scholarship),
P.O. Box 41361, Tucson, Arizona 85717-1361.
Please indicate "Raffle tickets" and the number
of tickets on the memo line. In
addition, you can help this cause through a
tax-deductible contribution directly to our
scholarship fund at The University of Arizona
Foundation. Please contact a board member for
information on how to contribute directly to the
fund. |
