AWSCPA Tucson Affiliate Members:
Hello everyone. Our fall lineup is looking
exciting. We are also planning to add a half day CPE in December
on tax advantaged retirement plan strategies for small
businesses. An invitation will be coming your way. Please
feel free to invite anyone you think would be interested.
At our September meeting speaker Bob Morrison explained how Desert
Angels can facilitate meetings between entrepreneurs and investors.
This was very informative for anyone in either of those
categories. If you have clients that are either looking for
new start up investments or are looking for funding, Desert Angels
would be a great place to start. If you would like more
information, you can reach Bob at 520-490-8137.
Our next lunch meeting is October 20th. We will
be returning from the Joint National Conference with new ideas to
share. Please feel free to bring guests (male or female). It
is always fun!
Sincerely,
Rose Lapham President

Coping with a low return
environment
Coping with a low return environment is hard.
Preserving financial staying power is of paramount importance under
these circumstances.
John H. Payne, CFA, President and CIO of Sterling Investment
Management will join us for lunch to discuss various strategies
that could be implemented by investors involved in actively
managing their assets in a current economic environment. Mr. Payne
incorporated Sterling Investment Management in 1995. Prior to
forming Sterling, John Payne, CFA managed the Investment Management
Group for Bank of America's Private Bank and Trust Department
platform in Southern Arizona.
Sterling Investment Management is well known for its approach to
meet each client's unique long-term total return goal. Sterling is
one of the few firms that perform its own in-house market analysis
using sophisticated analytical and statistical techniques. The firm
is an independent, 100% employee-owned corporation. While
headquartered in Tucson, Sterling's approximately 150 clients are
located throughout the U.S., with the majority of our clientele
residing in Arizona.
Please join us at Montana Avenue to learn about investing during
low return environment! R.S.V.P. today!

$$$ SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE $$$
|
Please be thinking of friends and acquaintances who
would be interested in a helping hand with their school
expenses. Our past recipients have been very grateful for
this assistance.
Four $750 scholarships will be awarded in December for female
accounting majors who have taken a non-traditional path to their
education. The money will be available in time for use
during the Spring 2011 semester. We also consider GPA
and financial need when making our decision of who will
receive the scholarships.
We will accept applications beginning September 15. You may
contact Deb Hutchinson at 352-1212 to obtain a form or e-mail her
at Deborah.Hutchinson@cliftoncpa.com to obtain an

In an effort to give back to the community, the AWSCPA
Tucson affiliate has started a tradition of collecting donations
for select charities and other charitable endeavors each year. We
also have our own scholarship fund through which we have given
scholarships to deserving college students - we awarded four
$750 scholarships last year and three $750 scholarships the
year before. We have also collected clothing for the YWCA
Your Sister's Closet. This year we have plans to help the community
as follows:
YWCA Your Sister's Closet This worthy organization
provides unemployed women with clothing that is appropriate for job
interviews and to begin employment. They need professional clothing
that is stylish, clean and preferably ON HANGERS. Clean out a
closet and bring your gently used items to our next luncheon.
You'll receive a receipt for your contribution, and we'll take care
of delivering them to the YWCA. Find out more about this
organization by visiting their website at www.ywcatucson.org/.
SCHOLARSHIPS The Tucson AWSCPA has a scholarship
program for female accounting students who have taken a
non-traditional path to their education. We plan
to award four scholarships of $750 each this year.
There are several ways you can help fund these scholarships:
$$$ Give and receive... participate in the 50/50 raffle at each
meeting - one ticket for $1 or six tickets for $5. The proceeds are
split - half to the winner and half to benefit the scholarship
fund. OR you can purchase tickets for the next raffle by sending
your check (made out to AWSCPA) to: Chris Elzy, AWSCPA Treasurer
(fbo scholarship), P.O. Box 41361, Tucson, Arizona 85717-1361.
Please indicate "Raffle tickets" and the number of
tickets on the memo line.
In addition, you can help this cause through a tax-deductible
contribution directly to our scholarship fund at The University of
Arizona Foundation. Please contact a board member for information
on how to contribute directly to the fund.
