Dear Kim,

Laura Foley newWell we sure have managed to start off on the right foot.  Thank you to everyone who attended our first luncheon on August 19.  I'm sure everyone came away with information they can use for sales tax issues in Tucson.  I hope to see as many people on September 16 when we learn how to prepare for the inevitable.

Also, I hope to see many of you at the Joint National Conference in October.  I know that everyone who attends will have a wonderful time in Las Vegas.  You can also earn up to 26 hours of CPE during your time there.

Sincerely,

Laura Foley

Preparing for the Inevitable: A Practical Discussion of the Financial and Tax Considerations When Someone Dies.

Presented by: Evelyn Kleinhans - Kleinhans, Lashbrook, Butler& Hoff, PLLC

Death can result in chaos in a family.  Whether the family is wealthy or of lesser means, there will be emotional and financial matters to handle, and frequently these tasks are left to family members who lack the experience to know what to do.  Although as financial advisors we are often not able to alleviate the family's grief, we can help reduce the financial complications and help them make sound decisions for their financial future.  We will discuss how to handle the financial and tax issues that arise when a death occurs.

Evelyn Kleinhans has practiced public accounting since 1979 and is currently a member of Kleinhans, Lashbrook, Butler & Hoff, P.L.L.C.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Master of Accounting, both from the University of Arizona.  She specializes in fiduciary, partnership and individual taxation.  Evelyn has instructed graduate tax courses in partnership taxation and business issues at the University of Arizona.  She has served on the Boards of the Southern Arizona Estate Planning Council, the Tucson Tax Study Group and the Sahuaro Girl Scout Council.  Evelyn also has been active in the Southern Arizona Community Foundation and the Jewish Community Foundation.

Charitable Endeavors

In an effort to give back to the community, the AWSCPA Tucson affiliate has started a tradition of collecting donations for select charities and other charitable endeavors each year. We also have our own scholarship fund through which we have given scholarships to deserving college students - we awarded three $750 scholarships last year and two $500 scholarships in each of the prior three years. We have also collected clothing for the YWCA Your Sister's Closet. This year we have plans to help the community as follows:

YWCA Your Sister's Closet  This worthy organization provides unemployed women with clothing that is appropriate for job interviews and to begin employment. They need professional clothing that is stylish, clean and preferably ON HANGERS. Clean out a closet and bring your gently used items to our next luncheon. You'll receive a receipt for your contribution, and we'll take care of delivering them to the YWCA. Find out more about this organization by visiting their website at
www.ywcatucson.org/.

SCHOLARSHIPS  The Tucson AWSCPA has a scholarship program for female accounting students who have taken a non-traditional path to their education. We have increased our scholarships from two at $500 each to three at $750 each.

There are several ways you can help fund these scholarships:

$$$ Give and receive... participate in the 50/50 raffle at each meeting - one ticket for $1 or six tickets for $5. The proceeds are split - half to the winner and half to benefit the scholarship fund. OR you can purchase tickets for the next raffle by sending your check (made out to AWSCPA) to: Chris Elzy, AWSCPA Treasurer (fbo scholarship), P.O. Box 41361, Tucson, Arizona 85717-1361. Please indicate "Raffle tickets" and the number of tickets on the memo line.

In addition, you can help this cause through a tax-deductible contribution directly to our scholarship fund at The University of Arizona Foundation. Please contact a board member for information on how to contribute directly to the fund.
